Lance
After Mica left for class, I hung around and shot the shit with TraâVon for a little while longer. Heâs a cool guy and has so much confidence it oozes out his pores. And I know heâs not faking it like I am.
Thereâs no doubt heâll make a great addition to the team this year and itâs got me excited about our chances to go to the tournament again and maybe even winning it this time.
But then again, weâve gone the last three years and have always lost in the final rounds. Every ball playerâs dream is to win a championship, and Iâm hoping it could be our year. Official team practices wonât start until mid-October, but until then, weâll begin informal training and drills in August when fall term begins. Nothing sanctioned or with the coaching staff, just the players, as we get to know the new recruits and players.
A draft of loneliness hits me as it dawns on me that Christian Lancaster and I will be the only returning fifth-year seniors on the team this year. Everyone else in our class has graduated or been drafted. My two best friends having gone their separate ways and found love in the process.
Maybe this will be my year, too, I think to myself as I step out of the shower and towel myself off. Iâm already practically committed to Mica, although we havenât made it official. But she must know I worship the ground she walks on and I want to make sure everyone knows sheâs off limits and is mine.
Mine, mine, mine.
The jealousy roars like a beast within me. Had I not known TraâVon was just busting my balls earlier with Mica, I wouldâve taken him to the ground and beat him to a pulp for even thinking he could make a move on her.
The one thing I do appreciate about Mica is that she isnât a flirt. I trust her implicitly. Sheâs loyal to a fault and would never go after another guy or one of my friends. She has a strong moral fiber and character in spades, unlike most of the other girls Iâve hooked up with in the past. One of which, Rainey, who was hanging around today in the café.
I know she saw me with Mica, but as soon as she left, Rainey was all over me. Whatâs the phrase? Oh yeah, like stink on a pig.
I noticed the glaring look she gave Mica and saw her whispering to her friend as Mica left the building, but I couldnât hear what she said. It couldnât have been very nice, though, by the way her eyes bore holes in the back of Micaâs head or the ugly cackle that came from her friendâs mouth.
I hightailed it out of there as soon as I could, heading into my Spanish class and then back home when class was done.
Now that Iâm getting ready for tonight, Iâm both excited and wary about hanging out with my friends from the hood.
